About the Author

I am an Agriculture instructor at Royal Valley High School in Northeast Kansas. I have taught since 2005, but worked for the Kansas State Department of Education for four years on the Career and Technical Education team. I received my Bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in Agriculture Education in 2005 and my Master's of Arts in Education from Baker University in 2007. I was named the National Association of Agricultural Education Outstanding Young Member for Region 2 in 2015 and my program was named the National Association of Agricultural Education Outstanding Secondary Program for Region 2 in 2018. I have served as a National FFA Teacher Ambassador from 2016-2019 and 2020-2021. Since the 2021-22 school year, I have served as a National FFA Teacher Ambassador Mentor.

Description
Applications in Horticulture provides instruction that incorporates plant science, soil and media mixtures, plant identification and optimal environments, and landscape design. This course will expose students to the art and science of growing plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, fruits, agriculture crops and vegetables. The course emphasizes applying such knowledge & skill to the design, establishment, and maintenance of lawns, parks, open space & similar environments. This course would include opportunities to design public and private spaces. Students will have the opportunity to produce, market different types of greenhouse plants grown in the school’s greenhouse. Skills in management, plant identification, pests control, starting plants, watering, fertilizing, and salesmanship will be developed.
